BIS registration is model-specific
Electronics and IT products in notified categories need BIS registration, and the registration is tied to the manufacturing site and the model. A new factory or a materially different model can require a new filing, so the compliance plan has to track the product roadmap rather than only the current SKU.
The BIS mark goes on the product or packaging, and the importer details go with it. A test report from a non-recognised lab does not substitute for the registration.
EPR and legal metrology are separate files
Plastic packaging, e-waste and batteries each have EPR obligations registered through the CPCB portal. The registration is separate from GST and from BIS, and the annual returns are part of the obligation rather than an afterthought.
Legal metrology rules require the MRP, quantity, importer and consumer-care details on the package. A label designed for another market rarely carries all of them. The compliance checker lists the recurring items, but the label artwork still has to be reviewed against the current rules.
Frequently asked questions
Is BIS required for all electronics?
It applies to the categories notified under the BIS schemes. Check the current list, because it expands over time.
Can I use a foreign test lab for BIS?
BIS recognises specific labs and schemes. Confirm the lab and the route before testing, or the report may not be accepted.
Does EPR apply to a small seller?
EPR obligations follow the producer and the packaging or product placed on the market, with thresholds in some schemes. Check the current rules for the specific stream.
