VAT / GST Calculator
Choose a country preset, enter an amount and decide whether the figure already includes tax. The calculator returns the net price, the tax and the gross price, plus the tax fraction needed to extract VAT from a gross amount.
Adding tax and removing tax are different sums
Adding VAT to a net price multiplies by the rate. Removing VAT from a gross price divides by one plus the rate. The second is not the same as subtracting the rate: 20% VAT on £100 is £20, but a £120 gross contains £20 of VAT, which is 16.67% of the gross, not 20%.
The calculator reports the tax fraction of the gross amount so the two directions cannot be confused. That fraction is also what you need when a marketplace payout is quoted gross and you have to separate the tax.
Import VAT is not always a cost
A VAT-registered business that imports goods for resale can usually recover import VAT, so it should not be treated as a permanent cost in the margin calculation. A non-registered seller or a business making exempt supplies cannot, and for them the tax is a real deduction.
The landed cost calculator has a checkbox for recoverability for exactly this reason. Turning it on removes the tax from the landed total while still showing what was charged at the border.

Frequently asked questions
Is import VAT recoverable?
For a VAT-registered business importing goods for taxable resale, usually yes. The rules depend on the destination country and the seller's registration status, so confirm with a local accountant.
Why is the rate different between EU countries?
The EU sets a common framework but each member state chooses its standard VAT rate, from 17% to 27%. The preset applies the destination country's standard rate.
Does the UK's £135 threshold remove VAT?
No. It removes customs duty, not VAT. VAT applies from the first pound, and for B2C sales up to £135 the seller usually collects it at checkout.
