Fixed fees decide the low end
eBay's percentage fee scales with price, but the per-order fee does not. On a $5 item, $0.40 is 8% before the final value fee even starts, which is why very cheap single items rarely work unless they ship in multiples. Bundling or raising the average order value is usually more effective than shaving the item cost.
Category matters more than on almost any other platform. The same seller can face materially different final value fees for a phone, a piece of clothing and a car part, so the preset in the calculator is only a starting point.
Where eBay still wins
eBay is strongest where buyers search for a specific item rather than browse a brand: replacement parts, discontinued models, collectibles and refurbished electronics. In those categories the platform's existing demand is difficult and expensive to replicate on an owned store.
For new commodity products, the comparison is usually against Amazon or your own store. eBay's advantage there is lower commitment — no monthly fee, no inventory required — which makes it a reasonable test channel before committing to a fulfilment model.
Frequently asked questions
Does eBay charge a monthly fee?
Not for a basic seller account. Store subscriptions are optional and mainly buy reduced fees and listing tools. Final value fees and per-order fees apply to sales.
Why did my payout come in lower than the sale price?
The final value fee, per-order fee and any promoted listing or international fee are deducted before payout. The fee calculator shows the same deductions so you can price for the net amount.
